Thanks to all for successful 2008 Farmers’ Market

The Mt. Airy Main Street Association Farmers’ Market Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who made the 2008 MAMSA farmers’ market a great success.

First and foremost we would like to thank all the three to four hundred patrons who came out to shop the local produce, coffee, flowers and baked goods. Each vendor offered a variety of goods that kept people coming back week after week, rain or shine. With the help of the farmers/vendors MAMSA is able to create a farmers market that offers a great shopping experience. Thank you for being a part of our market.

Everyone enjoyed the special events provided by the local restaurants and other organization and local musicians who entertained the shoppers while they shopped. MAMSA would like to thank them for their time and expertise.

We would also like to thank our intern, Laurel Hughes, for doing a terrific job as our farmers’ market manager and Scout Troop 81170 for taking over when Laurel went back to college. The Scouts shared responsibilities to keep the market running smoothly.

MAMSA is already, with the help of the farmers and vendors, planning next year farmers’ market. We are excited about starting our third year and look forward to seeing all of you in June 2009.

Thank you all from the Mt. Airy Main Street Association

Enjoyed Castellucci’s letter

I greatly enjoyed Mr. Castellucci letter on how he cannot afford the things he use to.

Even though he mentioned the federal government, even with this Wall Street scandal, why they let 92 billion dollars be stolen from Medicaid and Medicare without some one being arrested for it. He could have stated that under our present system, it’s too expensive to take shoplifters to court. So they basically look the other way and pass on the losses to the rest of the public.

He could look at our education system. Colleges keep going up, but does anyone really know how they are run. Harvard last year got over 20 billion dollars from their investments. Yet they still are tax free in their city.

These are just some of the questions he could, or should have asked. Instead he points out that illegal immigrants are not to be blamed. And he may be right. I know of no federal, state, county, city, or town who has done a study on how much it does cost.

I know education, health services and such costs money. And as taxpayers shouldn't we know the cost of these services? While we demand a survey on the cost from our elected officials, maybe Mr. Castellucci could spend his time writing to the 12 to 20 million people who have legally waited in line. Let them know they might not get in, but maybe their children's children have a shot.

Setting the record straight

The Mt. Airy Newsletter included as a stuffer in the Sept. 17 Messenger contains a significant error in the Message from the Mayor. In reference to the community’s response to the Sept. 2, 2007 downtown fire, the Mayor states that “In the weeks following the tragedy last September, the Main Street Merchants Association sponsored an important community fundraiser to help the businesses…”

It was the Mt. Airy Main Street Association (MAMSA) that sponsored events and raised funds to help the businesses burned out by the fire and promote the other downtown businesses adversely affected by a downturn is business resulting from the fire. MAMSA volunteers deserve a huge thank you and credit should be given where credit belongs.

I’m sure this was an oversight on the Mayor’s part so I simply want to set the record straight.
