A Main Street Christmas a huge success!

A Main Street Christmas, held in Mt. Airy Nov. 30 – Dec. 2, was a huge success, and thanks are due to many people and organizations: Mayor Johnson and the town council, the Town of Mt. Airy, the Mt. Airy Main Street Association, Browning Reagle Insurance, Olde Town Restaurant, The Kiwanis, Jaycees and Rotary Clubs, Century Ford, Hope Valley Golf Course, Skyview Gymnastics, Mt. Airy Public Library, Weis, the Gazette, the Civil Air Patrol, and NCP Travel.

We enjoyed the singing of the youngsters from Kids Come First Preschool at the tree lighting. Girl Scout Troop 1267 decorated our tree and served as Santa's helpers for the fourth year in a row! Thanks to Caleigh and Lawson Schneider for lighting the tree with Mayor Johnson.

Thanks to the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company for organizing our wonderful Twinkling Santa Parade and providing the Harmony Band for our enjoyment. Thank you DeVeda Coley, principal, Twin Ridge Elementary School, our Grand Marshal, and Ashley and Brittany Murphy and Cara McLaurin, our Junior Grand Marshals. We sincerely thank all those who created parade entries; we enjoyed your efforts.

We appreciate Browning Reagle Insurance hosting Santa's visit to Mt. Airy. Also, thanks to the Vintage Coffee House for hosting MAMSA's annual Wine and Ale fundraiser, to Calvary United Methodist Church for hosting the 'Sharing the Joy' concert on Sunday, for Calvary's Wesley Ringers and adult choirs, and musicians from St. James Episcopal Church, Mt. Airy Presbyterian Church, and the Grace and Truth Bible Fellowship for sharing their wonderful holiday music. We are happy to support the efforts of Mt. Airy NET.

To spread the word about our effort to light the Main Street Loop for the holidays, we appreciate the help of the four Girl Scout troops who went door-to-door with personal invitations, and to the Mt. Airy Business Women in Motion for Judging the decorations. We also thank Sherri Wing, our story teller, and Delia Schulman of Knittin Chicks for hosting the story times.

Thanks to Fun4Hours and Skyview Gymnastics for providing wonderful free activities for children through the afternoon. Thanks to the downtown merchants who participated in our annual Shop, Sip and Stroll.

For everyone else who helped and is not mentioned here, we sincerely thank you as well. This was a huge event, and an activity such as this cannot take place without a large number of volunteers. We have already begun planning next year's event which will be held Dec. 5 and 6, 2008.
