September 2008
By FRANK M. JOHNSON, Mayor of Mt. Airy As published Sept. 17, 2008
1. The First Year Anniversary of the Downtown Fire. On Sept. 2, 2007, the Bohn Building and Watkins Buildings burned out in the middle of our downtown area. That was a devastating day for several residents and business owners, as well as our community. We are very fortunate that our residents were helped by the Disaster Relief Fund, which continue in existence at P.O. Box 53, and could use support from our community so that we’re prepared for the next time assistance is needed. In addition, assistance was made available by Carroll County Economic Development to help businesses reopen quickly in the Rail Yard.
Now, a year later, it appears that the Bohn Building and 114 Main Street Building next to Town Hall will be opening within a few weeks. The Watkins Building will also be breaking ground within the same time frame. Please be sure to shop in all of the new locations right on Main Street!
2. Rain Barrels and Water Conserving Items. Rain barrels are available at Town Hall for town residents who will use them within town limits. The cost is the same as last year, $20. Contact Town Hall at (301) 829-1424 if you are interested. We have many people calling, so don’t delay if you are interested.
Also, the town has free water conserving faucet aerators and shower heads available for town residents who will agree to use them in Town.
3. Mt. Airy Fall Festival – Saturday, Oct. 4 and Sunday, Oct. 5. On our traditional first weekend of October, the town will celebrate Fall Festival. Crafters, vendors and good food will join with our downtown shops in offering many choices for shoppers and town visitors. A children’s section, along with rides and games, will also be available.
The festival will be open on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and on Sunday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. As every year, Main Street will be closed during that time, but the Civil Air Patrol will be on hand to point out the detour routes. Parking will also be available at the Carnival Grounds with a shuttle bus bringing attendees downtown. Enjoy our celebration this year downtown on October 4th and 5th!
4. Some Personal Challenges. Some may be aware of some injuries I sustained after a bicycling accident. I was fortunate to receive some quick attention after driving off the road outside of town one night. While I will need to wear a back brace for some time, I appear to be able to keep up with all other activities.
Although some accidents can’t be avoided, the best lessons I’ve heard are that head and tail lights are important, and wearing a helmet made all the difference in the world for me. Please be sure to wear helmets at all times, and lights at night.
5. Development Guidelines. The Growth and Development Task Force is working closely with the Planning Commission in considering steps the Town can finally put in place to ensure that any new development – especially but not exclusively only commercial – reflects the unique image, character and perspective that Mt. Airy has come to reflect over its history.
This process will be going on for the next several months. All are invited to participate during the discussion being hosted right now by the Growth and Development Task Force.
6. Commission Vacancies. We still have a number of positions available for anyone interested in serving the town. We have a few positions on the Growth and Development Task Force. Also, we have positions on the Water and Sewer Commission, Beautification Commission and Sanitation and Recycling Commission for anyone who’s interested in serving.
Please send an email to me at frankmjohnson@verizon.net or to Town Hall at mtairy2@comcast.net, or call Town Hall at (301) 829-1424 if you are interested.
