Henry R. Sterle
Henry Richard Sterle, age 89, of Mt. Airy died Saturday, April 12 at Lorien Assisted Living in Mt. Airy.
He was born Nov. 15, 1918 in Shoaf, Pa., the son of the late Joseph M. Sterle and the late Anna Pinteric Sterle.
He resided in Collier, Pa. for most of his life, moving to Mt. Airy in June 2003 where he resided at the Lorien Assisted Care Living and Nursing Home until his death.
He graduated from Georges High School where he played football and basketball. Graduated from West Virginia University in 1942 with a B.S. degree in animal husbandry and agriculture science. He played football for West Virginia University. He received a master’s degree in education from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Sterle served as an M.P. in Iran for 3½ years during WWII. He worked 20 years for the Veterans Administration program with “on the farm training” and Uniontown Vocational School. He taught for 15 years at Mt. Vernon High School in Fairfax County, Va. He was a lifetime member of the Uniontown VFW for over 50 years. As a member, he was active in the daily card club.
He is survived by his nephew, Ronald J. Sterle, and his family, of Middleburg Heights, Ohio; his niece, Joann S. Rockwell, and her family, of Mt. Airy; and a special friend, Thomas Rihn, and his family of Virginia.
He was predeceased by brothers, Joseph B. Sterle and Frank P. Sterle.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, April 19 at 11 a.m. at Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home, Inc., 603 N. Gallatin Ave. Ext., Uniontown, PA 15401.
Interment will be in Sylvan Heights Cemetery, Uniontown, Pa., where military honors will be accorded by VFW Post 47.
Friends may call at the Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home, Inc. on Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Donald F. Thomas
Mr. Donald F. Thomas, 72, of Mt. Airy, died on Thursday, April 10 at Sibley Memorial Hospital, Washington, D.C. He was the husband of Deloris D. Thomas, his wife of 46 years.
Born on June 3, 1935, in Oak Hill, W.V., he was the son of the late Don Fernando and Pauline Hale Thomas. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-1958 and was a member of Gold Star American Legion Post 191, in Mt. Airy.
He earned his degree in accounting from Concord College in Athens, WV, graduating in 1962 and worked in Washington, D.C. for the U.S. government until his retirement in 1991. Donald attended the Mt. Airy Baptist Church in Mt. Airy and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Hyattsville. He was an avid college basketball fan and enjoyed traveling, gardening, and country/bluegrass music.
Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters, Pamela Thomas King and husband Marc of Herndon, Va. and Beverly Thomas Himes and husband Allen of Bradenton, Fla.; a granddaughter, Lauren Nicole King of Herndon; and a brother, Phillip Thomas and wife Anne of Wilmington, N.C. Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Law and Mary Spahr.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mt. Airy, with Rev. Keith Vincent of the Mt. Airy Baptist Church officiating.
Interment will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Mt. Airy.

Ralph Edward Mennerick
Ralph Edward Mennerick,59 of Taylorsville died Thursday, April 10 at his home in Taylorsville. He was the spouse of his high school sweetheart, Sandi Martin Mennerick.
Mr. Mennerick was born Dec. 11, 1948 in Baltimore. He was the son of the late Ralph Leroy Mennerick, Jr. and the late Frances Lee Mennerick. He was retired but previously worked for Summit Electric. He enjoyed the outdoors, taking care of his property, his Harley-Davidson and animals.
Surviving him in addition to his wife are daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Robert Vaccaro of Arbutus, daughter and son-in-law, Stefanie and Rick Scranton of Mt. Airy; sister, Barbara Lagocki of New Jersey; and grandchildren, Joseph and Frank Vaccaro and Kyle Scranton.
Preceded in death by a brother, Steven Lee Mennerick.

Walter E. Chaney
Mr. Walter E. Chaney, 84, of Hagerstown, formerly of Mt. Airy and Frederick, died on Monday April 7 at Washington County Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Catherine P. Chaney.
Born Feb. 13, 1924 in Mt. Airy, he was the son of the late John E. and Rena Wilson Chaney. Mr. Chaney attended Mt. Airy High School and completed and received his diploma while serving in the U.S. Army. As a Tech Sergeant with the 775th Tank Regiment Company B during WWII., he saw action in the South Pacific, New Guinea, and the Philippine Islands.
After his military service, Mr. Chaney attended business school in Baltimore and then enrolled in various Dale Carnegie courses developing leadership and communication skills. He then worked in the advertising industry working for various companies, including the Donnelly Advertising Corporation, Metro Media, and Penn Advertising as an operations manager and consultant for over 40 years.
Mr. Chaney was instrumental in forming VFW Mt. Airy Post 10076 where he was a past commander and member. He was a member of Am Vets Post 2; a past commander and member of American Legion Post 191; district commander of the Maryland VFW state relations office; and a member of the Mt. Airy Fire Company where he served as lieutenant of the rescue unit from 1950-1952.
Mr. Chaney was also a member of the Marvin Chapel United Methodist Church, Mt. Airy; Elks Lodge 684; the Philanthropic Lodge 168 AF & AM; the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry 32nd degree Valleys of Baltimore and Frederick; and the Masonic Lodge of New Market.
Walter enjoyed cooking, golfing, gardening, pictorial painting, but most of all cherished his time spent with his family, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed spending time with his four-legged friends – Mugsy, Bailey, and Toby.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children, Bruce W. Chaney and wife Sharon of Mt. Airy, Renee B. Chaney of Keedysville, and Kim A. Nusbaum and fiancée Joe Bross of Columbia. Surviving grandchildren include Noel Chaney, Sean Chaney and wife Molly, and Elyse Nusbaum. Surviving great grandchildren include Braden and Noah Chaney. Brother John E. Chaney and his wife Ruth of Mt. Airy and sister Elizabeth Grisso of Ellicott City also survive him as well as numerous nieces and nephews. His granddaughter, Michelle Lynn Chaney, preceded him in death.
Interment was in Prospect Cemetery, Mt. Airy.

Janice Marie Stelmach
Janice Marie Stelmach (nee Waltrup), 66, of Mt. Airy, formerly of Brooklyn Park, died April 7, in her home of complications from liver cancer.
Janice was born on June 18, 1941 in Washington D.C. to Elizabeth Waltrup and the late Charles Waltrup.
She was a retired secretary from both the Anne Arundel and Carroll County school systems. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, swimming, dancing, gardening and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 45 years, George Stelmach; daughters, Jeannine Eddleton, Joanne Cotton, Carol Curley and Jennifer Shively; mother, Elizabeth Waltrup; brother, Richard Waltrup; and grandchildren, Andy, Tyler, Maggie, Jessica, Tommy, David, Eric, George, James, Elizabeth, and Ellie.
Interment will be in the St. Michael’s Catholic Church Cemetery, Mt. Airy.
